Little Kids Rock engages students by teaching them to play the popular musical styles that they know and love, including blues, rock, reggae, hip-hop and more. Kids are also taught how to compose and record their own original music.
The pedagogical underpinnings of Little Kids Rock draw upon a mixture of accepted practices in music and the broader field of education. Just as the immersion techniques used in second language education encourage students to learn by speaking, Little Kids Rock also encourages students to learn by playing. Says Little Kids Rock founder Dave Wish: "Our kids learn through doing; it’s more motivational that way."
This philosophy is also reflected in the famed Suzuki Method of violin instruction, introduced by Shinichi Suzuki in the 1950s. Suzuki believed that playing music was something that anyone could do and that, if introduced early enough, kids could learn to "speak" it like a mother tongue. Little Kids Rock draws upon this teaching methodology and applies it to popular musical genres that are the most likely to engage and excite young students.
